How to spot scale build-up in your espresso machine

If your espresso machine has been acting up lately — slower water flow or strange noises — it could be due to scale build-up. Over time, minerals from your water (like calcium and magnesium) can accumulate inside the machine. This not only affects performance but can also ruin the flavor of your espresso. If scale build-up is ignored, it can cause long-term damage to the machine. That’s why you should watch out for the following warning signs:

1. Visible scale build-up
Take a peek inside your water reservoir or the shower of the hot water outlet, which you can unsrew easily by hand. Do you notice white, chalky deposits or cloudy buildup? That’s scale — and it’s your machine’s way of saying it’s time for a deep clean.

2. Slow water flow
If water is coming out slower than usual, it could mean mineral buildup inside the pipes, shower screen, or group head. Scale can restrict water flow, making it harder for your espresso to extract properly. The result? Uneven shots and frustration.

3. Inconsistent temperature
When your espresso is much cooler than usual, it’s possible that scale is affecting the heating element. That said, temperature issues can have other causes too — and we cover those in detail in our dedicated video: Check it out here.

4. Unusual noises
If you hear gurgling, hissing, or sputtering sounds during operation, your espresso machine might be struggling to push water through scaled-up internal parts. This is another telltale sign that a descaling session is overdue.

What to do if your machine is scaled?

Scale build-up is inevitable if you use hard water. That’s why it’s important to regularly check your water quality and maintain your machine.

If your machine is scaled, you should have it professionally descaled. Visit our storelocator to find the nearest authorized dealer or service center. They can professionally descale your machine and check that everything is working properly.
